Canning, canning, canning!

Ashton Cloward, Carson Cooper, Garrett Cloward (L-R)
We have been busy canning! This is something relatively new for our family. We are in a 4-H club called Pigmania, and we do all sorts of projects. This has been our most recent one. Last week, we traveled south to Payson and picked about sixty pounds of raspeberries and blackberries. The following Saturday, we made them into syrup. It was really juicy, sticky, and messy, but FUN! We all really felt a sense of accomplishment, too. There are three families in our club, and each family walked away with about 26 pints of syrup! We also made some pancake mix to go with our new syrups. If you are lucky enough, maybe you will get to come and have some with us.

We have also been canning peaches. We canned 175 quarts for the three families to divide, and we have pears that we will do in about two weeks. Canning is something I have always been intimidated by, but I have learned a lot from the other 4-H leaders in our group. The process also is a lot more fun when you have people working together! I hope canning is something that my kids are enjoying, as I think it is a lost art. Our family has been very blessed to have these opportunities to build up our food storage as well.
